It is not possible for me to say that you're wrong if you do not tell me that all feedback during the process. Well, I guess you've added enough nitric acid and made a complete dissolution of the sample copper. First maybe you have not added enough in the precipitation of copper hydroxide. You should add enough alkali in order convert all the copper ions in copper hydroxide, so the final solution should be colorless and clear. Beware if you use ammonium hydroxide that neutralizing, you can copper complex in solution obtaining a solution of deep blue, and not all copper hydroxide would precipitate therefore prefer to use sodium hydroxide. You May also use lime, but getting a large firm that may be difficult to manage and filter and may keep some copper mechanically stopped, so it is not advisable. I do not think the conversion of copper hydroxide to oxide copper would be no problem.
